About Vastrapur Lake

The villagers of Vastrapur gam, like their brethren in other places, were not moneyed. They were mostly labourers and hence their lifestyles have not changed. Many Patels, who were rich, shifted to Kochrab as they did not wish to stay in the poor' village.

 

But, it is Vastrapur which has given two institutes of great repute to the country IIM-Ahmedabad and Physical Research Laboratory, where the payload for Chandrayan-I was created. Gujarat University also came up in Vastrapur.

 

Rapid development began after 1995. High-rises came up as the area had only bungalows. But, it also became infamous when Mansi Apartment fell during the earthquake in 2001. Vastrapur was under Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (Auda) for a long time. There was a big slum where Vastrapur Lake flows now, with about 400 families staying, almost making the lake invisible.

 

In 2002, Auda decided to remove the slum and develop the lake with a garden around it. The slum dwellers were given pucca houses nearby.

 

Vastrapur village has a neem tree, which people say is over 200 years old. Three generations in Vastrapur have seen the tree, which has a big width, and have venerated it for long.
