Somnath Temple

Somnath temple is one of Jyotirlinga of well known 12 Jyotirlinga. This temple is situated in Veraval city of Saurashtra in Gujrat enjoying close proximity of beautiful beach of Arabian Sea. This is one of the most ancient temple of Gujrat and with its beautiful structure and historical importance this temple is a center of attraction of shrines. Millions of people visit this beautiful temple every year from all around the world.

 

The first temple is said to be built in the beginning of common era. Second one is built by Yadava King of Vallabhi, replacing the first temple in 649 CE. After that Junayad, Arab Governer destroyed this temple in 725 CE. Then Nagabhata II reconstructed this temple 815 CE, this temple was destroyed many times and rebuilt many times but in 1701 Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb built a mosque on the place of Somnath Temple. Later on joint effort of Peshwa of Pune, Raja Bhonsle of Nagpur, Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore & Patilbuwa Shinde of Gwalior rebuilt the temple in 1783 AD, which was adjacent to the mosque. After independence in 1950, the mosque was shifted to few miles away from the place of temple. In May 1951 Rajendra Prasad the first president of India was laid the foundation of this modern temple. The present temple was build with the Chalukya style of architecture.
